Enviromentally Friendly Resin is Here! - May 31, 2008
Plastics play an important role in almost every aspect of our lives. Plastics are used to manufacture everyday products such as beverage containers, furniture and other household items. The widespread use of this valuable material demands proper management of used plastics pre and post-industrial and consumer.
Plastics are recycled for both economic and environmental reasons. Recycling and reuse of plastics have the obvious benefit of decreasing the amount of used plastics that end up in landfills. Through increased plastics recycling, fewer natural resources need to be extracted to produce virgin plastic.
In the past year we have been working with resin suppliers to refine the process of reintroducing post consumer plastic back into the manufacturing mainstream.
An ongoing initiative at Gracious Living has been to address the environmental concerns of the communities we serve with the products we manufacture. With the introduction of E.F.R (Environmentally Friendly Resin) into the market place we believe that we have developed an offering that will now give our retailers and their consumers a viable alternative to that of products manufactured using virgin material.
EFR is a trademarked exciting new concept that Gracious Living is now using in a range of its product lines. The material we use is a blend of polypropylene and polyethylene plastic that is made from "post industrial consumer" recycled goods. Through the use of this material, we decrease the use of "virgin" plastic, reducing the stress put on our invaluable natural resources.
In September of this year, Gracious Living was recognized and awarded the ECOnomics Innovation Award for its efforts in the development of EFR by the Think Green Alliance group, and was also invited to become the group's 34th member. The Think Green Alliance group ( www.thinkgreenalliance.com ), is a community of businesses and organizations that are committed to providing and promoting environmentally-friendly and sustainable services, products and goods.
According to the American Chemistry Council, the demand for recycled plastics exceeds the available supply, and demand is liable to increase given current "green" trends. Beyond this, the number of plastics recycling businesses has increased dramatically in Canada and the United States in recent years.
